APRIL 2001 SELECTIONS

SPRING'S A COMING!!

Main Selection
Sauvignon Blanc - the white grape of the upper Loire Valley and Sancerre, and second cousin to Chardonnay throughout California - is finding a real home on the North Fork of Long Island. Fresh and sprightly, with a flinty and steely edge giving way to a pleasant grassiness, these three are deliciously drinkable wines that herald the soft, sweet days of summer picnics sitting by the sea.

Hargrave 1998 Sauvignon Blanc, Blanc Fumé Reserve
A richer style of SB with flavors of citrus and spice, hints of olives and a soft, melon-y mouthfeel.

Jamesport 1998 Sauvignon Blanc
Crisp yet smooth at the same time, with bright citrus flavors mingling with melons and tropical fruits, and a rich mouthfeel.

Osprey's Dominion 1998 Sauvignon Blanc
Full nose of lychee nuts, a flinty, smoky Sauvignon Blanc reminiscent of Sancerre.

NOTABLE REDS - To go with your Spring Lamb

Alternate Selection #1
Notable in that they have recently received significant recognition for quality and food friendliness.

Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards 1998 Cabernet Franc
Seneca Lake Gold Medal Winner - New World International Wine Competition
Blackberry and Juniper aromas evolve to black cherry flavors with velvety tannins and a lingering fruity finish.

Palmer Vineyards 1998 Cabernet Franc
Long Island Reviewed as Editor's Choice and rated an "88" in the April Issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Harvested in late October, this estate grown Cabernet Franc is reminiscent of those produced in the Loire region of France. It has bright cherry flavors with hints of leather.

Keuka Overlook Wine Cellars 1999 Pinot Noir
Keuka Lake Double Gold Medal Winner - Florida State Wine Competition Rich & fruity, underpinned by a generous amount of smoky oak; Nice structured tannins penetrating ripe cherry nuances.

Late Harvest Vignoles - To go with your Chocolate Bunnies

Alternate Selection #2
There may be no better region in the world for consistently producing great late harvest wines than New York where the weather is dependable, and the vineyards are mature. (And New Yorkers have always had a bit of a sweet tooth.) When select grapes are left to hang on the vine late into the season, the grapes become dried and shriveled, highly concentrated with sugar and affected by Botrytis - the so-called "noble rot" responsible for the distinctive character of the great sweet wines of Sauternes, Germany, and Hungary. The viscous, sugar-concentrated juice is fermented to produce a sweet, elegant and powerfully evocative libation that gains wisdom and potency with age.

Anthony Road 1998 Late Harvest Vignoles
Seneca Lake
Residual Sugar 12.5%
Intense flavors of melons, mangos and other tropical fruits. Hand selected clusters yield a rich wine with apricot and honey flavors. Ideal with fruit desserts.

Swedish Hill 1999 Late Harvest Vignoles
Cayuga Lake
Residual Sugar 20.5%
Deep color and viscous, rich flavors of apricots, honey and ripe melons. Complex with a long finish.

Hunt Country 1998 Late Harvest Vignoles
Keuka Lake
Highly intense flavor conjures hints of apricots and tropical fruit. A wonderful dessert wine.
