MARCH 2002 SELECTIONS

Main Selection

Long Island Syrah

The classic red grape of the northern Rhone Valley of France and grown throughout southern France, syrah is also the leading grape of Australia (where it is known as shiraz). By the late 1980's, California vintners became increasingly fascinated by the grape which is now grown in many parts of California. These days, a number of New York wineries are experimenting with the grape, to great success. The wine often has an unmistakable whiff of white pepper along with wild gamey, boysenberry flavors. This is the first release of for each of these wineries.

Pindar Syrah
A dark, full-bodied red that screams flavor, especiallly if you open the bottle 3/4's of an hour before drinking. A must try for red wine lovers. Only 100 cases produced.

Laurel Lake Syrah
Rich earthy flavors with subtle overtones of chocolate. Rich tannins will make this wine an ager. (but drink it now with a steak - they'll make more…) GOLD MEDAL WINNER - Florida Int'l Wine Competition

Martha Clara Syrah
From one of Long Island's most meticulous vineyards, this wine is rich and extracted, with a full palate of plumy fruit and peppery spice.

Alternate Selection #1

Seyval Blanc
Seyval Blanc - a real sleeper of a grape. Originally developed in France, it is widely planted as a blending grape. Grown primarily in the northeastern US, Seyval is most similar to the leaner grapes, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, and has a clean, crisp flavor that leans toward the exotic.

Cascade Mountain 1998 Seyval Blanc
Hudson Valley
This dry Seyval Blanc is aged in stainless steel to preserve the fruit. Crisp, clean, and well balanced, this wine has won numerous awards, including three Gold Medals. Try it with swordfish, lobster, soft shell crabs, eggplant, New York goat cheese, pasta and lightly curried dishes.

Clinton Vineyards 2000 Seyval Blanc

Hudson Valley
"Ben Feder has so mastered Seyval that his wine resembles a stylish Macon chardonnay…with honeysuckle in the bouquet, delicately fruity flavor, mouth watering acidity and viscous creamy texture. The very soul of a fish dinner white." -The New York Times.

Glenora Winery 2000 Seyval Blanc
Seneca Lake
Rich layers of honey and lemony/lime citrus. Pleasing semi - dry finish. Perfect with chicken or pasta with white sauces. Close your eyes and you might think you're drinking a juicy New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.

Alternate Selection #2

Wines from Native American Grapes
Native varieties formed the backbone of the early New York wine industry because of their resistance to disease and their winter hardiness. Most native varieties exhibit a pleasantly pungent grapey quality, and these very well made ones are excellent cocktail wines.

Lakewood 1998 White Catawba
This pale gold Catawba opens with rich fragrances of peaches, apricots and even a hint of Muscat. Sweet and tart on the palate, the finish is reminiscent of ripe pears. A great summer sipper. Try with barbecued chicken or turkey breast.

Barrington 1999 Concord
Smell and taste the grape! Great as a wine cooler. 4.75% residual sugar.

1998 Macari Cabernet Franc
Luscious and tasting like freshly picked grapes. As refreshing as the cool mist of Niagara Falls on a hot summer day.
