Cabernet Franc, long overshadowed
by its more familiar relative, Cabernet Sauvignon, produces a dynamic,
vibrant red wine, densely concentrated with ripe fruit flavors and
wild herbs and minerals nuances. New York winemakers have realized
its potential and are now making some exceptional red wines from the
variety. Having achieved unprecedented popularity in the past decade,
Cabernet Franc seems poised to take center stage among a sleek new
generation of New York reds from Long Island, the Finger Lakes, and
the Hudson River Valley. This month we've selected some of the finest
from each region in New York.
Seneca Lake
Taste the vibrant cranberry and raspberry flavors, with hints of vanilla on the finish. This wine tastes good while young, and develops more intense flavor and structure with age.
Seneca Lake
A full-bodied wine with goof oak and tannin structure making it an excellent choice for laying down in your cellar. The superb black cherry and ripe fig aromas and flavors round out this selection. Try with hardy red meats, game and tomato dishes.
Seneca Lake
Slight smoky flavor with black plum aromas and a lively fruitiness that matches well with grilled foods, pasta, beef, duck, and venison.
Hudson Valley
A solid red. Firm and compact with a tight band of herb, cedar and
berry flavors with a bracing acidity.
Hudson Valley
The red grape of the Loire Valley in France and a component of most
Bordeaux, this is the best grape for the cool climate of New York.
Rich and full of tannins, with a deep red color. It should improve
for years to come.
Hudson Valley
Full bodied with a clean berry nose and a warm smooth finish. Enjoy this wine with any meal.
A stylish Cab Franc made by several fermentation methods. Rich and smooth, with abundant fruit and wonderful structure.
Long Island
Un-filtered, soft and rich. Nuances of licorice and clove highlight dark fruit and herbs on the soft finish. Big is not always better.
Long Island
A blend of 75% Cabernet Franc and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. A fragrant
blueberry chocolate covered cherry nose.
